Daniel, William, Josiah, Elkanah, Thomas, Robert.) Son of Daniel Cushman and Molly (Bowman) Cushman. William H. Cushman was born about 1791 in Vermont. (This is the location reported by his son Crocket in the US Census of 1920 of Portland, OR. The location is confirmed by reports of his sister’s birthplace; see below.) Find a Grave has him b. 1782.12947 Perhaps we have two William H Cushmans confused for there is another photo of stone at Find a Grave which says he died 18 Sep 1953?12948

William was a corporal in the war of 1812. He served in the New York Militia, in the ninth regiment of infantry, from Essex County, commanded by Martin Joiner (perhaps in the Siege of Plattsburgh in 1814?).
( William was in Ft. Wayne, IN, by 1828. In that year he signed a petition complaining about the conduct of General John Tipton. The petition was also signed by Dr. Benjamin Cushman, a cousin of William H. Cushman. Benjamin was descended from William Cushman and Sarah Holloway through their son William; and he became a prominent citizen in early Ft. Wayne.
William H. Cushman married Betsy Barnett about 1829, perhaps in Ft. Wayne, IN. Betsy was born in PA. She may have been related to James Barnett, a prominent citizen of Ft. Wayne, IN, at the time.
From about 1830 to about 1835 William and Betsy lived in Ft. Wayne, IN. Their two oldest children (named Holloway and John) were born in IN about 1830 and 1833. About 1835 the family relocated to Portland Township, Whiteside County, IL; their next child Madore was born in IL about 1836.
William H. Cushman had a sister named Narcissa Cushman. She was born in Vermont in 1797 (numerous census reports state this). She married Allen Baker in 1818 in Essex County, NY. The Bakers are found in Essex County through the 1840 US Census. In the 1850 census they are found in Whiteside County, IL, next door to the home of William Cushman.
William’s parents were Daniel Cushman and Molly Bowman. Daniel and Molly married in Brooklyn, Windham County, CT, in 1777. By 1804 there were in Essex County, NY, where Daniel participated in the creation of the town of Schroon Lake. In the 1840 census Daniel is a resident of Schroon Lake, living in the home of Allen and Narcissa Baker; his age is given as 85. By 1850 the Bakers had relocated to Whiteside County, IL.
Daniel was born on June 28, 1755. His parents were William Cushman and Sarah Holloway. Daniel served in the Revolutionary War; and he was a pensioner from that war. He married Molly Bowman on December 21, 1777, in Brooklyn, Windham County, CT. Daniel died on April 12, 1845 (according to his pensioner’s record), perhaps in Franklin County, NY.
Thus William H. Cushman was a grandson of William Cushman and Sarah Holloway.
William H. Cushman settled in Portland in 1835. It is not certain where he was born, some claiming that he came from Virginia, while Mr. Burke says that he came from Vermont, and that he served as a soldier in the war of 1812. He sold his farm in Portland in 1837 to Nathanial Norton, taking a new claim near by, where he lived several years, and then went to Oregon. He married Miss Betsey Barnett, the children of the marriage being: Daniel; Polly, who married Simeon Chaffee, and after his death, Mr. Morehouse; Wallace; Flavie, who married Chauncey Rowe; Hallaoway; John; Madore, who married Miss Hattie Coburn, and David D. all of whom live in Oregon, and Narcissa, who married John Kane, and lives in Iowa.12949
History of Portland Township, Chapter 21. Among the first to reach the new land (1834) of promise, were Horace BURKE, Simeon FULLER, and P. Bacchus BESSE. Mr. BURKE made his claim a little to the northwest of Where Spring Hill now stands; Simeon FULLER a few miles east of BURKE; and P. Bacchus BESSE still farther east, near the village, where he now lives. During the summer Alphonzo BROOKS, W. H. CUSHMAN, Joy AVERY, John Smith ROWE, Robert GETTY, Simeon CHAFFEE, and George STRATTON came, and the settlement extended along the margin of the timber through the town.12950

She may have been related to james Barnett, a prominent citizen of Ft. Wayne, at that time.12847 She would have been sixty years old when Polly was born?? Something wrong here. Re: Wallace Cushman b. 1826 Athens, Ohio d. 1888 Linn, Oregon Nancy Shire (View posts) Posted: 14 Apr 2003 9:24PM Classification: Query Surnames: Cushman, Rexford, Bennett, Hamilton I just checked your website and note that you have listed Wallace's parents as William C. Cushman and Betsy Barnett. A few months ago I saw a GenForum entry by Julie Bisch that listed this information. However, the information on Hannah Rexford's parents was wrong -- Ms. Bisch said that John LettsRexford and Charity Ann Brown were Hannah's parents; not true.
John LettsRexford, a Baptist preacher, was Hannah's uncle. He did not arrive in Oregon until some years after 1848. Hannah's father was William Dows Rexford; her mother was Laura Hamilton. You're right, I think the Rexfords came to Oregon about the same time (perhaps on the same wagon train) as the Cushmans. They left Lee County, Iowa in the spring of 1847, arriving in Oregon that fall, and filed on their claims the following spring.
I'll send you an e-mail attachment on the parents and children of William DowsRexford if you are interested.
The Orleans Cemetery is located on land donated by Wallace Cushman's brother, Daniel. Daniel's grave is there, along with that of his wife and several other family members. There was also a younger brother, named Holloway, who died as a young man. In that same cemetery is the grave of my great-grandmother's baby sister, Nancy Bennett, who died at age 3 of burns suffered when she fell into an open fireplace on the homestead (January 6, 1862). Nancy was the daughter of William Bennett and Laura Ann Rexford (Hannah's sister), and as I understand it her grave was one of the first on the site of the original cemetery, which was later deemed unsuitable for burials so Daniel Cushman deeded land for a "new" cemetery. 12966

Medford (Oregon) Mail, Friday, 28 Jun 1895, Trail Items, p. 2, c. 5: Mr. Wm. Cushman had a colt killed by a panther and Mr. Lawson also had a calf killed in like manner. Medford (Oregon) Mail, Friday, 10 Jan 1896, p. 5, c. 3: Registered Mail Lost. During the first part of last week a registered letter was reported lost somewhere between Etna and Trail postoffice. The letter alleged to have been lost was addressed to Wm. Cushman, Trail, and was all right when it reached the Etna postoffice. News of the matter reached this city yesterday, which is to the effect that the Etna postmaster claims to have sent the letter with another registered package for the Trail postoffice, with the two tied in one package--and that the Trail office receipted only for its own package. The Etna office has pressed the Trail office for an explanation and now an inspector has taken a hand in the affair. Who is to blame, our informant did not effect to know. The $300 contained in the letter stolen was in the shape of a $200 check and $100 in cash. It is quite probable that payment of the check has been stopped, yet the loss of even $100 will be quite severe on Mr. Cushman.
