Maxine May (Thomas) Cushman, 93, of Blackfoot, passed away June 15, 2012, as the result of an auto accident. She was born in Spokane, Wash., in 1919. She was a longtime business owner in Blackfoot and Pocatello, owning Cushman's Paint and Glass, Cushman's Crafts, and Cushman's Bookkeeping and Tax Preparation. She is preceded in death by her husband, Victor Andrew Cushman, whom she married Sept. 1, 1932. They were sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents, William H. Thomas and Martha Fjelsted Thomas (Walters), and siblings Daniel D. Thomas, Marie Thomas Covington and Helen Thomas. She is survived by a sister, Eloise Thomas McBride of Thomas; six children, Paula Parks (Raymond) of Moreland, Victor L. Cushman of Key West, Fla., Vicki Edison (Chris) of Spokane, Wash., Claudia Bigler (Jeffrey) of Brigham City, Utah, Kaye Nickell (Kenneth Greg) of Rose and Kelly Cushman (Leisa) of Blackfoot; 24 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions over the years, including the ward choir, Primary, Young Women's, camp director and Sunday School teacher. As a child, she lived in Spokane and St. Maries but spent most of her youth in Thomas. She graduated from high school in Thomas and attended college in Dillon, Mont., and Idaho State University in Pocatello. During World War II, Victor was stationed in San Diego, Calif., in the Navy. While living there, she trained and worked in aircraft and civil drafting. Later, they lived and operated businesses in Armstead, Dillon and Anaconda, Mont., before returning to live and work in the Blackfoot area. Maxine worked in the Bingham County Assessor's Office for 10 years and was elected county treasurer for eight years. Maxine and Victor purchased a local business that became Cushman's Paint and Glass in 1971. She later added craft supplies, art supplies and framing to the inventory. Eventually, this portion of the business grew until she opened a separate business, Cushman's Arts and Crafts, in Blackfoot, and later in Pocatello. Although she developed a thriving craft supply business, fine art supplies became her real passion. Although Maxine lived in a time when it was unusual for a woman to work outside the home, her formidable energy, drive, independence, intellect and belief in the value of hard work led her to occupations that were nontraditional. She also had a strong desire to contribute income to help raise their six children. She enjoyed supporting and encouraging the area's local artists. She loved music, theater and reading and was passionate about current events and politics. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, at the Blackfoot 6th Ward LDS Chapel, 660 Teton Drive. The family will meet with friends this evening from 6 to 8 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Riverside-Thomas Cemetery.
