Mrs. Adelbert Cushman Dead The subject of this brief sketch, Miss Emma Lucas, was born in Ayln(m)er, Province of Quebec, May 25, 1850. Her early home was happy under the hallowed influences of parents, brothers and sisters of the Episcopal faith. She came to Tunbridge in 1871 and was married on Christmas day following, to Adelbert Cushman of Tunbridge. One child only, her muchbeloved son, Frank, reached adult age. Her home was a happy one, although full of care and labor, which extended beyond her own household to neighbors and friends who bear glad testimony to her kindly administrations. A few weeks ago her illness became so painful that physicians decided that an operationwas necessary. She was taken -----(the rest of that line is unreadable). The operation was performed successfully and for two weeks hopes were entertained of her recovery. Then more dangerous symptoms appeared. Her son and wife visited her and bade her a last and affectionate farewell. Friday, Apr. 14, after a visit of her physician, she told her grief-stricken husband she could not remain long with him, but she cheerfully said, "It is all right. God is good, I rely on the promises of His word, which never fails." On saturday, afternoon there was a marked change, and at 4 o'clock, while her husband watched, she quietly and apparently without pain breathed her last. Her disease was cancer and gall-stones, the cancerous condition making recovery impossible in spite of the best medical attendance and most faithful nursing. Three brothers, with husband and son and son's wife and two grandchildren, are the near relatives who survive her. One of the brothers was present at the funeral; the other two reside in the Northwest Territory. She was a most excellent woman, full of good deeds, and is mourned by a large circle of friends and neighbors. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon from the Cong'l church. The service was conducted by Rev. E. H. Alden of Chester, Vt., former pastor of the church. Text from Proverbs 31:26-28. In spite of threatening clouds, the large gathering, most excellent and appropriate music and floral offerings testified to the esteem in which this good woman was held. The interment was in the cemetery at Tunbridge Market. C.6666 Photo of stone at Find A Grave.6668
