Mrs. Bertha May Cushman Weeks was born Feb 13 1879 at Bath, Mich. She is a daughter of Mial Cushman who was born in 1836 and was a brother of Charlie Cushman, the first white child born n Bath, Mich. Ira Cushman, the father of these two boys, died at 37 years of age, leaving his widow and the fatherless children in the wilds of a county habituated mostly by Indians. Mrs. Cushman was kind to the Indians, and they repected her and repaid her friendship with loving deeds for the comfort and safety of her little family. At that time, DeWitt, Mich. was the nearest milling center. The Indians would come from Detroit with ox team, stopping at Mrs. Cushmans’s place to stay all night, then go on to mill. When they came back they would be under the influence of liquor. The Chief would say: “Big sqaw be no fraid” They would chop wood enough to last until they came again on the next trip to mill. They built a fence around her cabin so the wolf could not get the two children. Mrs. Weeks has been married twice, Her first husband was W.W. Hunton, who died, and her second marriage was to Euguene M. Weeks. She has a complete record of her ancestry from Robert Cushman, belongs to the Mayflower Society and is a member of D.A. R. Her church membership is with the Baptists at South Bend, Ind. where she now resides. She has many Cushman relatives in Michigan, Illinois and Indiana of who it would be interesting to know more.3243
