(Joseph P, Abel, Apollos, Joshua, Robert, Thomas, Thomas, Robert). Son of Joseph Pierce Cushman and Emeline (Moe) Cushman. Photo of stone at Find A Grave.2480 1880 census has him as “Andy” and wife as “Cassie”.2477 Death record has his father as Jos. A Cushman and his motor as Caroline Moe.???

I think I have found your Andrew Jackson Cushman, but no evidence that he is the son of Joseph Pierce b 2 Mar 1811 in Maine.

The International Genealogical Index v5.0 shows an Andy Cushman, age 36 as of the 1880 census (b. 1844 in IL), a cooper, Married and living in La Porte City, Black Hawk, Iowa. Also in the household is Cassie [who I think may be Cassandra Diantha McIlroy (Mrs. Putnam)]) wife age 38, b. Ohio, a dressmaker with both father and mother born Ohio, and sons Dessie, and Thad and daughters Nettie and Dora. Two Putnams are also listed as sons, so Cassie must have first married a Putnam. The sons are John and Frank Putnam. Their father was born in PA, mother born in OH.558

The same index shows an Andrew Jackson Cushman, b. about 1846 in Columbus, Cherokee, Kansas. His father was Joseph Pierce Cushman. No b. date, place or source. This was recorded after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church. No source info available.558

Hi Robert,

I think I may have spoken (7/20/02) with the person who submitted the Mormon info. While trying to track down living descendents of Joseph Pierce Cushman, I found a Mormon twig off one branch of the family living in Las Vegas. Joseph Pierce Cushman had 8 children. His eldest son, my ancestor, Andrew Jackson Cushman, was born in 1845 in McHenry County, IL (literally just across the border from Wilmot, WI). Some census records say he was born in IL and some say WI. All 7 other children were born in Wilmot, Kenosha County, WI. A book on the history of Wilmot says the son of Joseph Cushman was the first child born in Wilmot (in the "spring of 1849"). That probably would have been Andrew's brother, Henry, born March, 1848. An 1847 census of Wilmot shows the Cushman family as 3 people - this would have been the 2 parents and Andrew. Their 3rd child, James, was born in April, 1850.2445

- END GAME FOR A.J. CUSHMAN -
- Forefathers came over in the Mayflower
A.J. Cushman, descendant of a Mayflower passenger and pioneer business man of Waterloo, died at 6:45 last evening at the family home, 318 Wellington Street. Kidney trouble, with which he had suffered for years, was the direct cause of death
Andrew Jackson Cushman was a native of WI, having been born at Wilmot, June 9, 1845. He was a son of J. P. Cushman, who moved to Wisconsin from Maine, where the Cushman family had resided since reaching America in the Mayflower.
Mr. Cushman attended the public schools of Wilmot and during vacations was employed in his father's cooperage plant. Thus he learned a business which he conducted with much success in Waterloo in later years. Prior to his departure from Wilmot, he became a partner in his father's business and acquitted him with much credit.
STARTED FACTORY HERE
Fifty years ago Mr. Cushman left Wisconsin and arrived In Iowa. His first home was at La Porte City. During the early years of his Iowa residence he operated a stage line between Waterloo and Vinton, part of the time driving one of the vehicles.Thirty years ago he came to Waterloo and immediately identified with the business life of this City. He purchased a tract of ground at Sycamore and Fifth streets, now occupied by the Ellis hotel and erected thereon a cooperage plant which employed more men than any other operation in Waterloo. The firm was known as the A. J. Cushman company, about fifteen years ago he disposed of business to the Creamery Package company and retired from active business in Waterloo.
Several years ago he established the National Creamery Supply com in Chicago and placed his oldest son, M.J., in charge. Following the death of the son a few years ago, the father again took up the managerial reins and guided the business until three years ago. when he disposed of his holdings to Chicago parties.
- SURVIVING RELATIVES
Mrs A.J. Cushman was married to Mr. C. A. Putnam of Cincinnati, 0., July 18, 1870. She had two sons by a previous marriage, John M Putnam of Los Angeles, Cal., and Frank A. Putnam of Houston, Texas. Besides the widow and the two step sons, these children survive: J.T., Jeanette, Dorothy, Naomi, Roy, Moe, Lou. All live in Waterloo except J. T., of Joplin. Mo., and Moe, of Mich City, Ind. A brother, James Cushman, lives in Kansas, and two sisters at Douglas, Ariz. They are Mrs. J. W. Tompkins and Mrs. Colon C. Barcley.
- WORDS OF APPRECIATION
That Mr. Cushman was held in the highest esteem by the stanch business and professional men of Waterloo, is evidenced by the following words from some of the men interviewed this morning by the Courier:
J.W. Arbuckle: "In the death of A. J. Cushman Waterloo has lost one of her true pioneers. He was a man of keen business judgment, unflinching energy, and of the highest integrity. He had great faith in this city and did his full part in laying the foundation of her greatness. He made for himself worthy place in society, and leaves to his family an honored name.
A. J. Edwards: "I was personally acquainted with A. J. Cushman for the past thirty years and have always found him to be a man of strict Integrity and honest in business, He was most energetic in business matters and was a good citizen."
F.W. Powers "A. J. Cushman was one of the pioneers in making Waterloo an industrial center, employing labor and increasing real estate values. He was one of those constructive, courageous, yet conservative individuals who could see opportunity for Iowa as a manufacturing state as well as an agricultural one. It was such pioneers as he that furnished the inspiration for the 'Greater Waterloo' of today. His dealings were always on the square and above reproach and suspicion. His life has been an uplift to this community and benediction to his family and friends. Such vacancies are never filled and forever missed

- Union Co., OH to Champaign Co., OH -
Cassandra was born on 31 May 1842 in Liberty twp, Union Co., OH. In 1860, she was living with the family of her brother, John, in Champaign Co. She may have stayed with John & Clairette rather than making the trek west with other family members. Her mother had just died and Cassie would have been about 10 or so when the family group departed. Cassie may have still been with the John's family when he died in 1866. About then or shortly after, she married Oscar Putnam He was noted as born in PA and lived in Cincinnati, OH. Based on the age of his children, Oscar likely died in 1868 or 1869. Cassie and Putnam had two sons, John born in 1867 and Frank born 1869.

By 1870, Cassie was in La Porte City, Black Hawk Co., IA, the new bride of Andrew Cushman. Cassie and Andrew had been married less than a year. With them were her two young Putnam sons.

Obituary data from Lucia (Cushman) Headen, descendant of Moe Andrew Cushman:
SOURCE of following obituary: Michigan City Evening News, July 17, 1920:
"WAS PROMINENT LADY"
"Mrs. Cassandra Cushman Lived Useful Life."
"The Waterloo, Ia., Courier of July 12th had the following account in connection with the death of Mrs. Cassandra Cushman, mother of M. A. Cushman of this city, brief mention of whose death has previously been made by The News:
"Mrs. Cassandra Cushman's active life ended at 10 a.m. today at her home, 318 Wellington Street, after an illness of only five days of heart trouble. She was a resident of Waterloo for more than 50 years and the wife of a pioneer manufacturer.
"A week ago last Wednesday, the day she became ill, Mrs. Cushman returned from a visit to Wyoming. She was 78 years old, and was the mother of 10 children, all but one of whom are living. She was a member of Grace Methodist Episcopal church for many years. As a member of the Order of Eastern Star and of Lincoln circle, Ladies of the G.A.R., she was loyal and active. During the war she gave her best energy and strength to her country. Her work for the Red Cross was unrelenting.
"She was a wonderful mother to us all," was the tribute paid today to Mrs. Cushman by her youngest laughter. [sic] [Lulu]-zhm
"BORN IN OHIO IN 1842"
"Cassandra McIlroy was born on a farm near Newton, O., May 31, 1842. She was married to John M. Putnam [LCH notation: other sources state husband was Oscar Allen Putnam] and they lived at Cincinnati. Cushman. Their union took place at Laporte City, July 18, 1870. To them were born eight children, of whom seven survive. They are: Moe A. Cushman, of Michigan City, Ind.; James T. Cushman, New Orleans, La.; Miss Jeannette E. Cushman, Chicago; Mrs. W. E. Little, Chicago; Mrs. D. P. Empfield, Cheyenne, Wyoming., Roy and Miss Lulu Cushman in Waterloo.
"ONE SON A NOTED AUTHOR"
"Frank A. Putnam was for many years a feature writer on Chicago daily newspapers. His contributions of verses were widely reproduced by other papers. His writings were bright with wit and uplifting in their wholesome philosophy.
"Mr. Cushman entered the manufacture of butter tubs and kindred supplies in an early day. His factory was where the Ellis hotel now stands. Mr. Cushman died seven years ago this month.
