From South Shore News, 6 Jul 1961, as excerpt from an article “The Story of Scituate” by Col Charles Wellingtoin Furlong.
The Throeau of Scituate To Edward Wesley Cushman, the Thoreau of Scituate, Scituate’s shores, marshlands, woods and countryside reealed their secrets as to no other. His ancestor, Robert Cushing [sic]m was prominent in the charterinf of the “Mayflower” and follwed shortly after in the good ship “Fortune.” Edward Wesley Cushman was a philosopher and a naturalist. His knowledge of naturaul history of the great part of New England was remarkable. I dout if anyone had ever had the intimate geologic, botanic, and georrgraphic knowledge of the sourth shore as did Cushman whose independent thinking, rate and sensitive qualities set him as a man apart. “A lost leder” an educator defined him. No one knows more than the writer, the heroic, quiet struggle of his last long weeks which a fall fro a tree imposed on him. I, alone, stood under the pines of the cemetery in Dubury when the curtain was rung down for Wesley. To the best of my knowlede the grave is still unmarked except by the hand of natue wich h loved. His letters and manuscripts in possession of this intimate friends may some day form a marked contriburion to the history and literature of the South shore and his umpublished poem “All Hallows” written on Egypt Beacch will become a clasic.”1343

You are bidding on an original Civil War CDV photograph of U.S. Navy Gunner George Perry Cushman who served in the Union Navy from about 1861 until 1891.
This photograph came out of the personal album of Naval Surgeon R.A. Lewis who served for a time on the USS Saint Louis. The album was broken up and sold separately but I was able to purchase a few images that had not been sold. All the images are ID'D to the USS St. Louis. I would not be selling this image separately had the collection not been broken up by the previous owner.
Cushman was born in Massachusetts on Oct. 18, 1837 and died July 1 or 2, 1912. On Ancestry, it lists this information on his profile.
Ancestry also has his Mason / Freemason / Masonic membership card, which lists his birthplace as Duxbury, Mass. He was a member of the Cornerstone Lodge and his occupation is listed as a retired naval officer.
The book, "The Union Navy" by Arthur Wyllie lists Cushman as being assigned to the Saint Louis as her Gunner.
This image is in great condition as it was in an album for more than 120 years. The subject is also in nice focus and very clean. Happy bidding!!!-Ebay listing 18 Feb 2014
